On February 18, 1947, the day that Ken McKenzie, Curtis McKenzie, and Woodrow Brittain founded the company, growth wasn’t the top priority. “There were at least 50 or so other grocery warehouses within a 100 mile radius of Grocery Supply Company,” remembered Kenneth McKenzie, “We provided products and reliable service while building trust and confidence between us and the customer.” It was that trust and confidence that enabled the company to grow. Within a few years, GSC began to outgrow the warehouse in Mt. Vernon. And in 1953, within just six years, the three partners began expanding. By 1965, after several expansions, GSC had again outgrown the available space and moved into 42,000 square feet of space at its current location in Sulphur Springs, Texas. Today, after 14 major expansions, the warehouse has over 400,000 square feet of available space under one roof. J.T. Davenport & Sons, Inc. is a Wholesale Distributor, founded by John Taylor Davenport during the late 1800’s in Morehead City, North Carolina. In the early 1900’s Mr. Davenport decided he needed to move the company near the center of the state where major railroad and highway facilities existed. The town of Sanford, NC was chosen for these reasons.
In 1917, Mr. Davenport, Sr., along with his two sons, John T. Davenport and Taylor D. Davenport, opened a 6,000 square foot warehouse on Chatham Street with a total of 5 employees. After a number of years at this location it became clear, that if the company were to continue to prosper, a new warehouse would be necessary. So in January 1962, the Company moved to a new, modern warehouse located on Third Street, with three acres, employing 40 some people.
During this time it also became evident that convenience stores were going to become a major force in the United States so the company’s focus was changed to serve these new outlets.
Our continued success enabled us to open our present warehouse in 1984, a 135,000 square foot facility located on 70 acres of land. Since that time, we have expanded our facilities to approximately 211,000 square feet and are now servicing North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Maryland, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia. We presently employ approximately 340 people and service approximately 2000 convenience stores.
Our mission is to sustain planned, profitable growth with our business partners by providing superior service and unique solutions while creating an environment for our employees that encourages teamwork and innovative thinking.

Leroy W. Davis founded the Old Dominion Tobacco Company in 1875. The company began as a cigar manufacturing establishment, supplying retail tobacco stores with hand made cigars. Mr. Davis then acquired several local tobacco jobbers that led the company into the distribution of multiple tobacco products.
In 1902 Mr. Davis again bought out several other tobacco companies, and formed the L.W. Davis Tobacco Company. On May 27, 1904, the Old Dominion Tobacco Company was incorporated and was well established in the distribution business. The company began adding lines of products other than tobacco, and currently supplies over 10,000 different products to all classes of the retail trade.
The company is now under the leadership of Robin Davis Ray, great granddaughter of the founder, doing business as Atlantic Dominion Distributors.
